1. Who is best suited for an Abundance Retreat?

Abundance Retreats are designed for those that physically and mentally care for themselves, those who are practicing healthy management of their life, and those who refrain from drug use and can abstain from alcohol during the trip.

We are not able to provide care for those who have a severe psychiatric diagnosis. Abundance Retreats are held at a private retreat center and are not in-patient treatment center. We are not licensed to prescribe and dispense medications. If you have any specific questions in regard to your physical or mental health status, please contact us and we will be happy to address your specific situation.

2. What happens at an Abundance Retreat?

Abundance Retreat is an individual process done in a group setting. It is a structured retreat that encourages participants to work in an individual fashion while providing many opportunities for group interaction. You will have the time to spend your mornings preparing for the day with yoga practice, time on the beach, journaling, and community breakfast. All work is designed to help you to understand how you became the person you are and empower you to build a future that goes beyond your past life stories.

There are shared meals, cultural awareness activities, art therapy, excursions to the city, jungle, and beach, volunteer activities in the inner city, guided imagery, and sessions in which participants have the opportunity to deeply experience and express their thoughts and feelings. Daily yoga practice, journaling, pool-time, beach access, and hammocks are all available to allow the space for change and growth through quiet time.

Small break-out groups are scheduled daily to discuss and process the day’s assignments; art and yoga rooms are available at any time; and massage can be scheduled.  There is time for walking, jogging, swimming, and cooking.

The focus of the time is to provide an experience that becomes the catalyst for new aspects of yourself to develop.

3. What forms of payment are accepted?

Master Card, Visa, Check, PayPal

4. If I’m in mental health therapy, do you need to speak with my therapist?

We highly recommend that you give our licensed professional permission to communicate with you and your therapist. Communicating with your therapist both prior to and after the retreat creates a continuity of care that enhances your growth.

5. How far in advance of an Abundance Retreat workshop do I need to enroll?

Two months is recommended to allow for travel arrangements and verify that your passport is in hand by the time you depart. We will also meet two times prior to departure.

6. Where is the retreat held?

The Abundance Retreats in the Dominican Republic are held at Karaya Villas in the conveniently situated town of Sosua, Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic is in the heart of the Caribbean, southeast of Miami. The island is located between Puerto Rico and Cuba.

The retreat center is a private, comfortable location with a very supportive and helpful staff. Staff include both Americans and Dominicans with fluent translators/interpreters available for each step of the process. Pleat note that the Dominican culture and Spanish are different than what a typical American has experienced with the main Latin culture in the US.

You can anticipate that the environment is suitable for a phenomenal retreat—warm sun, swimming pool, AC in rooms, nice accommodations, and gardens near beach vistas.

7. What airport do I fly into?

For Dominican Retreats, the nearest airport is Puerto Plata International Airport (POP). If you plan to drive to the retreat center directly or are going to fly into another airport on the island, please notify staff.  Staff will assist with arranging transportation to and from the airport if you need it.  The cost is $35 USD and can be paid prior to arrival.  Please send a photograph with a clear image of her face for the driver to identify you. All details related to travel will be provided in your pre-retreat information session in the US.

8. Is it possible to have a single room?

Accommodations are double occupancy. A single will be made available for an additional charge, only in the case of a documented medical requirement. We will thoroughly screen everyone to make certain that you are comfortable with your housemates.

9. May I bring my cell phone or electronic devices?

We strongly encourage participants to focus on themselves while at the retreat and their personal process. We understand that you may need to briefly check in at home or work. But we very strongly recommend that all contact be necessary, brief and kept to a bare minimum. We make arrangements for your contacts to reach us in case of emergency. It is your process and we want you to have the very best opportunities for growth.

10. What food is provided at a retreat?

Menus are centered on a traditional Dominican diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, and organic meats and fish. The diet will include vegetarian options at each meal. Snacks, juice, coffee, tea, and water are available throughout the time. The chef is apprised in advance of any allergies or food restrictions so that your specific dietary needs are met. Participants are encouraged to join with the chef in using cooking to engage in an intercultural exchange of language and cuisine and intentional presence. For many, cooking in community is an enjoyable experience that can become a highlight of how growth occurred.

11. How is confidentiality controlled by the Abundance Retreat?

A policy of confidentiality is maintained by all staff. Participants are asked to maintain confidentiality regarding fellow participants.  Participants can share their own experience or sign wavers to have their photos or testimonials posted in public forums.
